Research is Our Path Toward the CureDr. Loren Tschetter, with Sanford Clinic Oncology, is the Principal Investigator for cancer clinical trials which focus on developing new strategies for the prevention, detection, treatment, and overall improvement of the care and quality of life of people with cancer or people at high risk for developing cancer. Here are some of the current studies that are open for participation. American Indian women suffer from an abnormally high amount of cervical cancer. Maria Bell, MD of Sanford Clinic OB/GYN, Ltd. is focusing research on the Native American population in South Dakota on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. Dr. Bell hopes that her research will lead to a more conservative and efficient treatment for HPV, such as vaccinating children at an early age. Headed by Sarah L. Patrick, MPH, Ph.D., the goal of the Center for Rural Health Improvement is to improve the health of rural South Dakotans through participatory community-based research targeted to the major health needs in these communities. Through this South Dakota will see improved morbidity and mortality statistics, enhanced health related quality of life, integrated and stable preventative and curative health. The center will focus on cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, cancer, infectious disease and mental health. Jakica Tancabelic, MD and Linda Stout, MD, both with Sanford Childrens Specialty Clinic, are members of the Childrens Oncology Group (COG), a National Cancer Institute funded organization. The COG mission is to cure and prevent childhood and adolescent cancer through scientific discovery and compassionate care. COG develops and coordinates cancer clinical trials conducted at the 238 member institutions, which include cancer centers of all major universities and teaching hospitals throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as sites in Europe and Australia. COG members include over 5000 cancer researchers dedicated to saving the lives of children with cancer. Interested in participating in a research study? Call 605-333-4444 for more information |
