Rehab and Therapy Services

Rehabilitation and therapy services are necessary when a person with a disability, disease or injury is in need of assistance beyond the person's personal capacities and resources to achieve his/her maximum potential.


Physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatry) is a branch of medicine that is concerned with:

What is physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatry)?

  • the treatment of patients with a disability, disease, or injury to achieve and maintain function
     
  • the diagnosis of injuries or physical conditions
     
  • treatment by external means, including heat, massage, or exercise, rather than by medication or surgery


What services are available on the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit?

 

  • Consists of a 29 bed unit
     
  • More intensive therapy from Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Recreational Therapy.
     
  • 24 Hour/ 7 days per week Nursing services
     
  • Rehabilitation services will assist patients with mobility (walking and transfers), Activities of Daily Living, and speech and cognitive activities.

The program is accredited by the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission (CARF).


What types of patients qualify for admission to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit?

 

  • Fractures
     
  • Spinal Cord injuries
     
  • Head injuries
     
  • Strokes
     
  • Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, etc.
     
  • Amputee’s
     
  • Pulmonary and Cardiac Patients
     
  • Joint Replacements


What is Acute Care Therapy?

 

  • Acutely ill hospital patients.
     
  • Wide variety of patients, ranging from the routine to critically involved, from the very young to the very old.
     
  • Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy.
     
  • Therapy services will assist patients with mobility, transfers, walking, strengthening, balance, activities of daily living, problem solving, swallowing, speech, memory and understanding.

What is the Center for Joint Success?

 

  • Patients undergoing total knee and hip surgeries.
     
  • Education session prior to surgery.
     
  • Team of nursing, physical therapists, occupational therapists, case manager, and pharmacists provides comprehensive care to assist the patient in returning home in a timely fashion.
     
  • Therapy services will assist patients with mobility, transfers, walking, strengthening, and activities of daily living.


Do you have services for children?

 

  • Yes, we have a team of physical, occupational and speech therapists dedicated to working with kids.
     
  • Services include developmental activities, mobility, walking, balance, sensory activities, feeding, swallowing, and language.
     
  • Kids are seen here at the hospital, as an outpatient, or in their homes.


What is the CORE program?

 

  • The CORE program provides physical and occupational therapy with a strong emphasis on returning to work. This may involve work simulation tasks along with physical conditioning, strengthening, body mechanics and pain management strategies.

Can physical therapists treat neck and back pain?

  • Physical therapists are professionals that evaluate and develop treatment programs for patients experiencing neck and back pain. Treatment plans may include: instruction in proper posture, exercise, joint mobilization and passive modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation or mechanical traction. Physical therapists can also help patients to prevent back and neck injuries.

What types of orthopedic injuries do you treat?

Physical and occupational therapists work with a variety of injuries which may include:

 

  • Knee pain
     
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
     
  • Hand injuries
     
  • Tennis elbow
     
  • ACL tear
     
  • Neck pain
     
  • Back pain
     
  • Rotator cuff injury
     
  • Hip fracture

  • Injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents


Do you have pool therapy available?

Both of our outpatient rehabilitation sites provide pool therapy. Pool therapy enables patients to begin their rehabilitation in either our warm water or cool water pool depending upon the patient’s needs.


I’m not sure if I or a loved one should be driving. Do you have a Driving Evaluation Program?


 

  • An Occupational therapist will evaluate a person's ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, recommend adaptive equipment, further training or driving restrictions to provide older adults and those with disabilities the opportunity for independence through driving. Testing involves evaluation of functional ability, visual acuity, field of vision, depth perception, reaction time, cognitive functioning, behind the wheel, evaluation and recommendation for adaptive equipment or vehicle best suited to the individuals needs.

Where is Sanford's Outpatient Rehabilitation Services located at?

 

  • The Van Demark Building - 1210 West 18th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57117 (Sanford Outpatient Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Services are located on the lower level of the Van Demark Building and is easily accessible by parking in the 17th Street and Covell Avenue parking lot.)
