Be a Volunteer

Whatever your time, talents or interest, there are many volunteer opportunities at Sanford USD Medical Center.


Baby Rocker: To provide physical and mental stimulation to the hospitalized infant/child whose parents are unable to spend as much time with their children as they would like due to prolonged hospitalization and distance. Please note that you must be 19 years of age to volunteer in this area.

Blood Bank: To assist the Blood Bank in obtaining blood donation commitments.

Cafe Host/Hostess: To act as a host or hostess in the hospital cafe greeting families and visitors, assisting in carrying food trays, cleaning tables and keeping the cafe clear of clutter.

Cafeteria Hostess/Host: To enhance the dining experience of all the customers. To assist in welcoming visitors, filling condiments, and keeping dining area clean.

Catheterization Lab: To act as a host or hostess in the Catheterization area, providing coffee and non-medical, non-confidential information to family members.

Cancer Center Boutique: Volunteers assist boutique customers with retail purchases, operate cash register, scheduling customers for appointments, tracking inventory and opening and/or closing boutique.

C.H.I.L.D. Service: To offer educational and support services to family daycare providers and parents in the surrounding community.

Child Care Aide: To meet the needs of parents who utilize the Wellness Center by providing child care services or summer recreational activities in the playroom area or adjacent outside areas. Volunteers will be used to assist hired staff.

Clerical/Aids: To provide hospital departments and offices with clerical support. This can be either on a weekly or on-call basis.

Computer Aide: To provide support services in the area of data entry.

Coronary Care Unit: To enhance the CCU healthcare team in providing information, support and comfort to patients and their families/visitors. To provide housekeeping, clerical messenger and transport support as needed.

Dialysis Host/Hostess: Volunteers act as host or hostess in the Dialysis area, providing coffee to patients, families or friends. Assist in transporting patients from the front lobby area to dialysis. To support and comfort patients by providing refreshments, reading, playing games or listening. Assist in restocking supplies.

Escort: To provide patients waiting in the admissions area with a warm welcome. To escort patients to test areas or patient rooms.

Escort Surgical Tower: Volunteers escort patient's families from surgical tower to patient rooms. To provide housekeeping, clerical, messenger and transport support as needed.

G.I. and Same Day Surgery Volunteer: To provide support services to Same Day Surgery staff in the G.I. section.

Gift Shop: Gift shop volunteers will primarily wait on customers in the gift shop, operate cash register, answer phone, take messages, telephone orders for flowers and gift items, and may, on occasion, deliver flowers to patient rooms.

Greeter Hospital Lobby: Volunteers enhance the Lobby in providing information, support and comfort to patients and their families/visitors. To provide housekeeping, clerical messenger and transport support as needed.

Magazines: To distribute magazines to waiting rooms and lounges.

Mail: To assist with the accurate and timely delivery of patient mail and to assist patients in the opening and reading of their mail.

Medical Museum: To provide individuals who visit the Sioux Empire Medical Museum with information regarding the medical items on display.

Nursing Unit Volunteer Aide: To provide support services to patients, guests and staff. To stock supplies, pass water and assist nurses as requested.

Parish Nurse: Volunteering as a parish nurse in a faith community. To work with the faith community health committees.

Pediatric Playroom: To assist pediatrics staff in creating a positive experience for hospitalized children by providing physical and mental stimulation. Please note that you must be 19 years of age to volunteer in this area.

Pet Therapy: This program utilize animals affiliated with the Animal Assisted Therapy program as a therapeutic modality to enhance emotional, physical, cognitive and social function of hospitalized patients on the cardiology unit. You must have a licensed therapy pet.

Pharmacy Aide: To provide support services to the Pharmacy Department.

Printing and Graphics: Volunteers assist in processing bulk and regular print jobs; collate projects, laminating, stapling and folding, and other clerical duties.

Trauma 5 Host/Hostess: To enhance the Trauma Five's healthcare team in providing non-medical information, support and comfort to patients and their families/visitors. To provide housekeeping, clerical, messenger and transport support as needed. Assist in restocking supplies. Please note that you must be 19 years of age to volunteer in this area.

Waiting Room Host/Hostess: To provide support services in waiting room. To answer phones, make coffee, direct visitors to cafeteria, restroom etc.

Wellness Center: To assist staff in the nursery area with members' pre-school children.
