Sanford Children’s research is helping to find cures for childhood diseases and illnesses so kids can focus on being kids.

Sanford Children’s is positioned to be on the forefront of pediatric research to “Improve the Human Condition” for the youngest members of our population. We are helping to find cures for childhood diseases and illnesses so kids can focus on being kids.

Sanford Children’s:
  • Participates in specially designed and monitored research studies as South Dakota’s only member of the National Cancer Institute-sponsored Children’s Oncology Group.


  • Faculty engage in investigator-initiated and collaborative research projects through Sanford Research/USD, including international fetal alcohol syndrome research studies led by Eugene Hoyme, MD, Sanford Children’s Chief Pediatric Medical Officer and Amy Elliott, PhD, Vice Chair for Pediatric Research, and a longitudinal study of the environmental influences within NICU environment led by Dennis Stevens, MD.


  • Actively facilitates and participates in pediatric clinical trials to better assess and treat a multitude of conditions including asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, PKU and more.


  • Collaborates with Mayo Clinic in research and education projects focused on preventing, treating and curing childhood diseases.


  • Works closely with the Center for Disabilities.
